PROCESSES
CYANOTYPE - MONOPRINT - ENCAUSTIC
Working in a number of print making and mixed media for original artworks
Alternative print processes like cyanotypes are created using chemically sensitized papers and processing the image created with plant materials. By toning with natural acids and water, textures and colors can be altered either in the early or post processing stages. Hand coloring and encaustics can be combined to continue layering on top of finished images.
Monoprints or Monotypes are single and original hand pulled prints. Plates used for monoprinting range from gel plates to encaustic collograph plates. Paint or ink can be applied to the plate with a traditional brayer. The image is created directly onto the plate by subtraction or addition. The paper is pressed by hand to lift the image and some prints consists of multiple layers to achieve the final image. All of my printmaking processes are very physical and process driven. There’s alot of “work” involved, a common theme of growing up in a small rural town.
Encaustic and collograph plates are made using hot wax to create the image on the plate. The plate is then "inked" ala poupee' so a singe image can be run through a press to achieve multiple colors in one press. A painterly effect is achieved with this process. By using Akua inks that are soy based, the art studio stays "green".
Encaustic monoprints are made by using melted pigmented wax and other compatible media directly onto a heated palette and lifting an image onto translucent Japanese papers.
Encaustic paintings consist of working with a mixture of melted beeswax and damar resin to create a wax medium that is layered and fused with heat or fire directly onto wooden panels to create a painting. The use of collage materials, pigments, mark making by incising and scraping back wax to reveal hidden marks are part of the many methods of working with this ancient medium.
